for solo piano
Program Notes
The Mysterious Fountain came from two very different sources of inspiration, both of which are referenced in the title: Francois Couperin’s Les Baricades Misterieuses and Federico Fellini’s 1960 film La Dolce Vita, particularly the iconic scene set in the Trevi Fountain in Rome. At many points in the piece, the sounds of flowing water are suggested by the piano. Couperin himself also makes a few “cameo” appearances, which are sometimes subtle and at other times literal.
